BACTERICIDE. A chemical or physical agent that kills or protects from bacteria.
BAHIAGRASS. (Paspalum notatum) A coarse textured, warm season grass, with a seedhead that is commonly two spikelets.
BENTGRASS. (Agrostis spp.) A fine textured, cool season, grass tolerant of close mowing heights. Often used on golf greens.
BERMUDAGRASS. A vigorous, warm season grass, of moderate texture that is a vigorous grower. (Cynodon dactylon).
BIANNIAL. (BA) Plant that completes its life cycle in two years. The first year it produces leaves and stores food, and produces flowers and seeds the second year.
BIOLOGICAL CONTROL. The control of pests through the use of living organisms such as predators, parasites, and disease causing organisms.
BIOMAGNIFICATION. The tendency of pesticides to accumulate in organisms as the pesticide is transmitted through the food chain.
BLADE. (Grass) The nonclasping portion of a grass leaf above the collar and ligule.
BLEND. A combination of two or more cultivars of a single species for seeding purposes.
BLUEGRASSES. (Poa spp.) A genus of cool season grasses. The most important is Kentucky Bluegrass, probably the most popular turfgrass in the nation.
BROADCAST APPLICATION. An application of spray, dust, or granules over an entire area.
BULK DENSITY. The apparent density of a dry soil as it occurs in the field. Affected by pore space and organic content.
BROADLEAF WEEDS. Popular term for dicot weeds. They have: (1) two seed leaves; (2) net venation.
BULLIFORM. Bubblelike. Used to describe enlarged water or motor cells in the grass leaf epidermis. |
