MAT. Thatch which has become intermixed with soil.

MERISTEM. A tissue made up of cells that are specialised for division.

MIDRIB. The middle or main vein of a grass leaf.

MINOR ELEMENTS. Essential elements that are required in small amounts, i.e. iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, chlorine, and molybdenum.

MIXTURE (seed). A combination of two or more species. As opposed to a blend which is a combination of 2 or more cultivars of the same species.

MONOCOT. A plant with only one seed leaf and parallel venation. Grasses are monocots.

MONOCULTURE. A turfgrass community made up of only one species.

MYCELIUM. A collective term for the mass of interwoven filaments (hyphae) that make up the body of a fungous organism.
