Pesticides - General

Reference to Agrichemical Users' Code of Practice (Growsafe Manual) is recommended.

The toxicity of a pesticide is based on its LD, that is, how much pesticide is needed to kill 50% of a test animal population.

Pesticides are grouped into 5 classes to tell us how dangerous a pesticide is.

Classification

The hazard class of a pesticide depends on its...
Class Hazard Warning
1 Deadly poison
2 Dangerous poison
3 Poison
4 Harmful substance
5 Low toxicity

The hazard class of a pesticide depends on its...

  1. LD50
  2. Concentration
  3. Formulation, and
  4. Persistence in the body

Fungicides

Turf Fungicide Groups Subject to Resistance Problems

If a pathogen develops resistance to one fungicide in a group then it may become resistant to other products within that group. This is called 'cross resistance'. The recommendation would be to alternate between the different groups and only alternate between different sub groups (e.g. with DMI's) where there is no other choice.

1. DICARBOXIMIDES - MODERATE RISK
  Iprodione - Rovral
  Procymidone - Sumisclex
  Vinclozolin - Ronilan
2. BENZIMIDAZOLES - HIGH RISK
  Benomyl - Benlate
  Carbendazim - Bavistin
    - Delsene
    - Protek
3. DMI's - LOW RISK
  Triazoles - Bayleton 5DF
    - Cereous
    - Tilt
    - Alto
    - Folicur
  Imidazoles - Sportak
  Piperazines - Saprol
  Pyrimdines - Rubigan
4. PHENYLAMIDES - HIGH RISK
  Metalaxyl - Ridomil
5. AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS - MODERATE RISK
  Quintozene - Terraclor
