The Association held our 40th Anniversary on the 10th-11th June 2007 at the Chisholm Park Golf Club. Their was a golf tournament held on the Sunday with a field of 48 played as 12 pulled out the day before because of the weather. They did not know Humpy had a good day set for this! Thanks to very good sponsors every one got a prise. We had a few of our older members whom do not play golf these days come along and meet up and had a few drinks. In the evening we had a dinner with entertainment and a speaker .A good night was had by all most all. Thanks to the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendents for sending President Brett Burgess down for this.
Monday morning saw a 7degree frost and most turned up on time for an 8-30am start. We started off with a bit of history of the club from John Humphries. Went on to David Howard to talk on how he has seen changes in his time in the Southern region .Bruce Low was given time to tell a few porky .After morning tea we had a bit of a links walk it was pleasing to see the respect these people showed in still not walking on the greens as the frost was still their ,could have been a saver .We had a look at the areas where Chisholm is building 1new green and extending another. After discussion and folk could have their say lunch was had then folk drifted toward home.
In mid August the Association held a field day at the Gore Golf Club where the host Turf Manager is Maurice Bredin whom has been their for 40 year plus. We started with Maurice giving us the history of the club and where they are heading. We then had an extended course walk with lots to see as it had been a number of years since last at Gore. Sure was very good to see the changers they have made, with taking out some large blocks of trees letting the light in and areas which never used to grow good grass now so good. The greens are in fine condition for this time of year in the south.
After morning tea Gerard Quinn from the I T O spoke on ways to get funding for trainees and how to keep them, their was a fair question time on this.
David Howard had a talk on water management mils not minutes on the controller to get what you want.
After lunch Maurice got some old mowers out even an overgreens mower should have seen a few young guys trying to turn em .o boy .Also some trade people had some equipment on trailers on their way for delivery which created interest and good discussion. Folk headed home at 3-30 pm.
On November 22nd 2007 at the Golf Otago Awards dinner the Southern Turf Managers Association presented our inaugural awards .
