This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who takes genuine pride in course presentation and enjoys being out on the greens as much as planning behind the scenes.

The Role:

Reporting to the designated Board representative, the Head Greenkeeper is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, presentation and long-term health of the course.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise and guide the greenkeeping team and volunteers to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and meet Board and Grounds Committee standards.

  • Maintain accurate records, including maintenance logs, chemical application records, equipment inventory and staff attendance.

  • Prepare the annual course maintenance budget, monitor expenses throughout the year, and identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality.

  • Ensure all work is carried out safely and in line with health, safety and environmental requirements, including the safe handling and storage of chemicals.

  • Plan and lead course preparation for club competitions, tournaments and events.

  • Promote teamwork and open communication within the greenkeeping team, and maintain regular contact with the designated Board representative.

Skills & Experience:

We are looking for someone who brings, but is not limited to:

  • Proven experience in golf course or fine-turf greenkeeping.

  • A mechanically minded approach, with confidence maintaining and operating greenkeeping machinery.

  • Flexibility with working hours, including rostered weekend work and tournament preparation.

  • A positive, outdoors attitude, strong communication skills and the ability to work well with others.

  • A current full New Zealand driver’s licence.

  • The ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Why Masterton:

Masterton is a growing and affordable Wairarapa town with an easy pace of life, a strong sense of community and the outdoors on your doorstep. You’ll work on a well-established, much-loved course with a supportive Board, a committed team and a genuine opportunity to put your own stamp on its presentation.
