Cromwell Golf Club - Greenkeeper Role

The Cromwell Golf Course is situated in the heart of Central Otago, near the banks of Lake Dunstan. Cromwell and the surrounding districts have lots to offer, but our focus is the game of golf.

We are looking for a greenkeeper to join our team. This is a full-time role offering 40 hours a week subject to seasonal variations.

Applications will be considered from fully qualified individuals (level 3 or 4 certificate in turf management) to those just getting started in the industry.

Applicants will have to:

  • work independently and in a team environment.

  • be reliable and be prepared to work some rostered weekend duties.

  • have a good understanding of Health and Safety in the work environment.

  • work well unsupervised.

  • have a high level of attention to detail and good time management skills.

  • have a valid driving license.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Course Superintendent in maintaining the course, plant and equipment.

Remuneration will be based on qualifications and experience.

GSL are seeking an experienced and motivated Head Groundsperson to lead the delivery of high-quality turf management and irrigation services across sports fields, high-profile sites and civil construction projects.

About You

You bring 5+ years’ proven experience in turf and irrigation management, along with:

Mexted Sports Turf - Grounds Staff / Cricket Roles

Mexted Sports Turf has recently won the contract to maintain the Basin Reserve – The Home of Cricket - and we are now looking to recruit three highly-motivated sports turf professionals with a passion for cricket to work under the guidance of our Curator at the Basin, as part of our broader central Wellington team.

The three exciting positions we are seeking to fill are:

  1. A cricket preparation specialist – based at the Wellington High Performance Indoor Cricket Centre

  2. A grounds person with previous cricket preparation experience – based at Wellington College

  3. A sports turf apprentice – based at the Basin Reserve

1. Cricket Preparation Specialist – High Performance Indoor Cricket Centre

For this role we are seeking a highly skilled person experienced in preparing international-standard wickets to manage the High Performance Indoor Cricket Centre, on the campus of Wellington College.

The successful candidate will have the drive, enthusiasm and expertise to deliver exceptional pitch preparation for both professional and community cricket.

We are looking for a person with a flexible attitude, strong communication skills and a calm, approachable manner to deal with the pressures of the day-to-day running of this busy facility.

You’ll be working closely with cricket teams at all levels, so the confidence and ability to communicate clearly and positively with stakeholders is a must.

It involves flexible working hours to meet the requirements of opening and closing the facility for users seven days a week, with back up support from other members of the Wellington city team.

Key responsibilities:

  • plan, prepare, monitor and maintain cricket wickets;

  • work closely with cricket teams, coaches and grounds staff to ensure wicket conditions align with usage requirements;

  • conduct regular maintenance of the facility, including mowing, rolling and irrigation;

  • manage and control wicket preparation resources, including tools, equipment, and materials;

  • keep detailed records of pitch conditions and maintenance schedules.

2. Groundsperson – Wellington College

This role will be based primarily at Wellington College.

We are looking for someone who’s passionate about cricket and sports turf management, with a commitment to preparing high-quality playing surfaces. You’ll need to be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of the team.

Positive interaction with school staff, students, players and other stakeholders is vital in this role.

The groundperson role also supports our Cricket Preparation Specialist at the High-Performance Indoor Cricket Facility (e.g. leave cover and opening and closing on rostered weekends) as well as the Basin Reserve team (e.g. for test match preparation).

A Level 4 Sports Turf qualification would be preferred, or a strong willingness to learn.

Key responsibilities:

  • preparation and renovation of cricket wickets and cricket blocks;

  • sportsfield and amenity mowing;

  • line marking;

  • seasonal renovations;

  • assisting with goal post installations;

  • maintaining a high standard of overall presentation and aesthetics across all facilities;

  • safe operation and daily care of plant and equipment.

3. Sports Turf Apprentice – Basin Reserve

This is a great opportunity for someone who has begun their sports turf apprenticeship and is passionate about cricket to join a highly successful and motivated team, working at the prestigious Basin Reserve - The Home of Cricket.

You’ll be supported by our experienced staff at the Basin, reporting to the Curator and working alongside the 2IC.

You’ll have a keen interest in cricket, preferably with some prior experience in this area of sports turf management.

Key responsibilities:

  • working alongside our Curator and 2IC:

  • undertaking preparation of cricket wickets and cricket blocks;

  • mowing;

  • line marking;

  • undertaking seasonal renovations;

  • looking after the surrounds;

  • safe operation and daily care or plant and equipment;

  • positive communication with players, the public and stakeholders.

About You

For all the above roles we are looking for staff who:

  • Take pride in presentation and pay attention to detail

  • Are physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Able to operate plant and equipment safely and competently

  • Have good communication skills and professional customer interaction

  • Are reliable, self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Have a clean Class 1 Driver’s Licence

  • Are willing to undergo a Police Check

Around 80% of your time will be spent in the field, working alongside your team, sharing your technical knowledge, and setting the standard through your own work. You'll oversee the delivery of sports field maintenance, ensuring surfaces are safe, well‑presented, and ready for everything from community training sessions to high‑profile sporting events held at Rotorua International Stadium. You'll plan and support turf care programmes, seasonal renovations, mowing schedules, line marking, aeration, and everything needed to keep our green spaces in excellent condition.

You will take a leading role in organising and delivering mowing services across parks and reserves, adapting work programmes to seasonal growth patterns and ensuring that our open spaces are consistently maintained to a high standard. Effective resource use, equipment care, and operational efficiency are key parts of the role, and you'll be trusted to keep things running smoothly and safely.

Irrigation and water management will also be an important part of your responsibilities. You'll monitor systems, respond to faults, and adjust irrigation schedules based on weather and soil conditions to support sustainable and healthy turf growth.

As a team leader, you'll allocate daily tasks, provide coaching and guidance, and help build capability within your team. You'll foster a positive, supportive, safety‑first culture where everyone feels valued and motivated. Strong leadership is essential, especially when it comes to promoting safe work practices, managing risks, and ensuring all activities meet both legislative and council requirements.

You'll also play a key role in interacting with the community and stakeholders. Whether it's responding to service requests, working with local sports clubs, or coordinating with contractors and internal teams, you'll represent the Council with professionalism, clarity, and a commitment to great service.

To succeed in this role, you'll ideally bring a background in turf management, horticulture, or a related field, supported by several years of experience in sports field, golf course or grounds maintenance. You'll have proven supervisory or leadership experience, a strong understanding of turf management requirements of various sports codes, and confidence operating and caring for mowing and turf equipment. A full driver's licence is required, growsafe and machinery endorsements are a welcome advantage.

Qualified Greenkeeper – The Hills Golf Course, Arrowtown

In late 2023, a partnership between the Hill family and the owners and developers of Tara Iti and Te Arai was announced, with the vision of repositioning The Hills as a highly sought-after golf and lifestyle community.

Renovation work commenced in early April, including a full golf course reconstruction lead by architects OCM, enhancements to existing facilities, and the development of new amenities such as a state-of-the-art golf teaching centre. The course renovation will be carried out over the next two winters, with a selection of holes remaining open for play at all times.

As we head into winter, the Greenkeeping team is looking to expand. This is an exciting opportunity for a Qualified Greenkeeper to be involved in both the reconstruction of the course and the ongoing maintenance of operational holes.

Methven Golf Club is looking for a suitably qualified and experienced person preferably close to or holding level 3 or 4 qualifications for our 18-hole course situated just outside Methven township and only a short distance from the famous Mt Hutt Ski Field.

This is a full-time position that offers up-and-coming Greens Keepers experience at one of Mid-Canterbury’s most popular golfing venues for members and the many visitors we host annually.

We are looking for a passionate individual who will drive excellence within our small team and help to deliver a high-quality course, with top-class playing surfaces through best practice maintenance activities.

We are looking for the following skills and attributes:

a) Experience leading volunteers and able to fit into a small vibrant team.

b) Comprehensive knowledge of turf management and agronomy including formal qualifications such as a recognised turf diploma/certificate, including relevant spraying expertise.

Wainui Golf & Function Centre is one of Auckland’s most progressive golf facilities, operating a 27-hole championship golf course, driving range, and hospitality venue.

As the Club continues to develop and elevate course conditioning standards, we are seeking an experienced full-time Mechanic to join our Course Team.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to take ownership of the maintenance and reliability of the Club’s machinery fleet and play an important part in supporting the ongoing development of the course.

The Role

Reporting to the Course Superintendent, the Mechanic will be responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Club’s machinery fleet.

The role focuses on preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair, ensuring equipment is maintained to a high standard and available to support daily course operations.

Equipment includes:

  • Golf course turf maintenance machinery

  • Ride-on and greens mowers

  • Utility vehicles

  • Golf carts (electric and petrol)

  • Small engines and pumps

This position provides the opportunity to take ownership of the Club’s machinery fleet and develop a structured preventative maintenance programme supporting a 27-hole facility.

Fleet & Workshop Responsibility

The successful candidate will take ownership of the Club’s machinery maintenance programme and workshop operations.

This includes developing and maintaining a structured preventative maintenance schedule, maintaining accurate service records, managing spare parts inventory, and working closely with the Course Superintendent to ensure machinery is set up and maintained to support course presentation standards.

The role offers the opportunity to establish best-practice maintenance systems and contribute to the long-term machinery strategy for the Club.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and service the Club’s fleet of turf maintenance machinery and vehicles

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults

  • Implement and manage a preventative maintenance programme

  • Maintain accurate service and maintenance records

  • Manage spare parts and workshop inventory

  • Provide recommendations on repair versus replacement of equipment

About You

We are seeking a practical and experienced mechanic who takes pride in maintaining machinery to a high standard.

Ideally you will have:

  • A relevant mechanical qualification (automotive, diesel, or small engine technology)

  • 3–5 years’ experience working with small engines, diesel engines, hydraulic systems and electrical diagnostics

  • Experience servicing machinery such as mowers, utility vehicles, or similar equipment

  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding ability

  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail

Experience with turf machinery or golf course equipment would be highly advantageous.

Additional desirable experience includes:

  • Brands such as Toro, John Deere or similar

  • Basic welding or fabrication skills

  • Experience with electric vehicles or battery systems

The Role

You’ll ensure our clients' lawns are healthy and looking their best. Your day-to-day will involve:

  • Lawn Care: Diagnosis and Management of Weeds, Pests, and Diseases.

  • Treatment Services: Including the use of Fertilisers, Insecticides, and Herbicides.

  • Specialist Services: Hydroseeding for erosion control and instant turf installation.

  • Technology: Managing smart irrigation systems and performing repairs (training provided!).

  • Customer Service: Engaging with clients to ensure a superior, professional experience.

About You

We are looking for a reliable professional who thrives working both solo and as part of a crew. Ideally, you bring:

  • Experience: Previous Greenkeeping or Turf Management experience is a major plus, but a great attitude and willingness to learn are key.

  • Skills: Strong knowledge of turf health and chemical application.

  • Communication: Clear written and oral English to chat with our awesome clients.

  • Professionalism: A tidy appearance, excellent timekeeping, and a solid understanding of Health & Safety.

  • Certifications: A valid full driver’s licence and Growsafe Certification are essential.

  • Physical fitness and willingness to work in all weather conditions

Golf Course Construction Project – Muriwai Downs Farm, Auckland

Bears Home Project Management is leading the delivery of a landmark golf course construction project at Muriwai Downs Farm, near Muriwai Beach on Auckland’s West Coast — just under 40 minutes from Auckland CBD.

This major development will see the creation of one of New Zealand’s newest championship-level golf courses, designed to highlight the extraordinary natural landscape of the property, including wetlands, ravines, streams, and waterfalls.

The course architect is internationally renowned designer Kyle Phillips, with plans for an 18-hole championship course that makes the most of the site’s diverse terrain and features.

Alongside the golf course, the wider development includes plans for premium resort facilities and ecological enhancements that celebrate both sport and the local environment.

We’re Recruiting:

We are currently seeking Greenkeepers and Apprentice Greenkeepers to join the team working on this high-profile project.

You will initially be involved in course construction activities, progressing toward full course conditioning and maintenance as the project develops toward its expected opening in late 2027.

Golf course construction experience is beneficial but not essential — what matters most is your enthusiasm, work ethic, and pride in doing a great job.
